On August 31, 2016, I went to job shadow at Lindsay Westwood Veterinary Clinic. I choose the Vet clinic because since a little girl, I have always wanted to become a veterinarian. Even though throughout the years my choice has changed, I'm still interested in the job and wanted to actually experience how it would be working at a vet clinic. I followed around a young lady named Marisol Santiago, who was a Veterinarian Technician. I arrived at 1pm and spent 4 hours at the clinic with her getting the whole experience throughout the day. As I arrived at the clinic, I was greeted by all the assistants of the Vet and met the veterinarian later on because she was on her lunch. Right away I was lead to the room where they do surgery on the animals, get their medicines, check the animals and where they keep them in cages. There were two dogs in their kennels named Dalyla and Riley, then three cats named Twinkle, Mamma Cat and Jack. Dalyla, Twinkle and Mamma cat were all taken their to get spayed so I actually got the chance to see the veterinarian do surgery on the animals. I was able to see up front how they inject Anastasia in the animals so they wouldn't move through surgery. Marisol explained how they used a device they hooked on the animals tongue when they fell asleep to keep track of their heart beats and breathing. After the animals had passed out, they took them into the surgery room and the veterinarian proceeded to do surgery on them. She did the surgery's quite quick I have to say, she spent about 20-40 min on each. While the animals were in surgery, Marisol led me around the veterinarian clinic and showed me all the instruments they used and their purpose. Afterwards, a newborn Labrador puppy had been brought in because it wasent moving as much as the other puppies. They kept checking its temperature in its behind and put a heating disc underneath it to keep it warm. At around 2 is when all the appointments started coming in. A bunch of different dogs kept coming in with their owners to get check ups or vaccines. I followed Marisol around to every client to hear and see what was wrong with the dog . One client brought in her Chihuahua named Penny who had been limping recently. Marisol checked her weight, temperature and then had the veterinarian come in to check her too. The vet checked her heartbeat and then felt Pennies leg to see if she had broken it. Then she had Penny walk to see if she was limping. She came to the conclusion that it wasent anything serious or to worry about. Later on we had two dogs come in for their rabies shots and one of them was aggressive. We had to clear out the dogs from the waiting room in order to bring her in. We also had a huge dog come in to have their shoulder checked for a sist. The rest of the day we just had dogs come in one after another for their appointments, towards the end I asked Marisol some more questions, thanked her and left. Spending my day their, I was able to learn some of the instruments that they used and why they used it. I learned how they prepared animals for surgery and how they injected the vaccines. Also how they signed the papers for the animals and how they handled their appointments. One thing I liked about my time spent their were all the procedures the vet assistants had to do. They always had to be doing something every minute and staying on task. One thing I disliked though was all the standing, at the end of the day my feet were hurting from all the standing and walking but other than that, it was an amazing experience. In conclusion, my point of view going towards this career has slightly changed, I still want it as an option to go towards but now I really like the career more. Now that I have actually experienced what a daily day is at the vet clinic and what happens their, I'm more interested because it looks fun and exciting. Having all the surgery's, appointments, and being able to be with the animals is something I would enjoy doing.
